Mike Balson


NISOA Hall of Fame - Class of 2006

Mike Balson joined NISOA in 1981 as a member of the GSIOA Chapter.  Three years later, he became a NISOA National Referee, began a long and distinguished run of officiating the top post-season tournaments in the nation.  In 1984 he worked both the NJCC and NAIA women's national finals and the following year officiated at the NCCAA Women's National Tournament.

He broke into the NCAA tournament in 1991, advancing to the women's quarterfinals in 1996.  In 1999, he was bestowed the honor of officiating the NCAA Division I championship match.

From 2000 to 2003, he served in the NCAA men's quarterfinals and Final 16, a span of time when he also officiated the ACC men's finals.  In 2002 he was chosen as referee for the NCCAA Division I championship match, an honor that was repeated in 2004 and 2005.  The following year, Balson served as a referee for the NCAA men's semifinal and was an assistant referee for the championship match.

Balson also was active with his chapter, serving as vice-president for five years.
