ONEONTA, NY (April 4, 2006) – Albert Harker
(Hall of Fame Class of 1979), born on April 11, 1910 and the
oldest living Hall of Famer at age 95, passed away on Monday,
April 3 in Camp Hill, PA. Harker was the last living member of
the 1934 U. S. World Cup team that defeated Mexico in Rome on
May 24 in a qualification match. The team lost to eventual
champion Italy in the first round proper of the single
elimination tournament.
Al was also the left back for the great
Philadelphia German-American teams that won the U.S. Amateur
Cup in 1933 and 1934 and the U.S. Open Cup in 1936. He wore
his 1934 Amateur Cup Championship ring throughout his life.
He was also selected as a member of the
U.S. Olympic team in 1936 but couldn't afford to take the
eight weeks off work to make the trip.†During his time with
the German-Americans, the club won the American Soccer League
(ASL) title in 1935, and later, as the Philadelphia Americans,
won league titles in 1942, 1944 and 1947, and the ASL Lewis
Cup in 1941 and 1943. He played fullback for the ASL All-Stars
in a major international match against a Scottish touring team
at the Polo Grounds in New York in 1939 and for the Eastern
U.S. Select Team against the same touring team in the same
year.†His career began at Girard College where he played
varsity from 1926-1929. He joined the Philadelphia National
League in 1929, playing for Corinthians in his first year, for
Upper Darby 1930-31, and for the Kensington Blue Bells, the
1931-32 winners of the Allied Cup and Pennsylvania League
runners-up, before joining the German-Americans. He won Penn
State League championships in 1932-33 and 1933-34, and state
open and amateur championships from 1932-1935.†He was a
three-time Pennsylvania League all-star.
The Hall of Fame recently reconnected with
Albert Harker and participated in a reception at the ManorCare
facility in which he lived. Four generations of Harkers were
present for the reception where the Hall of Fame presented
Albert with his Hall of Fame medal and reviewed photographs of
the teams on which he played, extending the Hall’s knowledge
of his soccer career.
