Born in the Philippines of British
parents, Ray grew up in Britain and won the Distinguished Flying
Medal while serving in the Royal Air Force. He commenced
refereeing in Hampshire and emigrated to Canada in 1947. Between
1947 and 1967 he refereed nine "A" or full internationals as an
official referee for FIFA, the governing body of World Soccer.
In the same period, he handled nine amateur internationals
including the game between France and India at Grosseto in the
final rounds of the Olympics in Rome in 1962. In 1962, he was
the senior linesman in three games in the 1962 World Cup finals
in Chile. Ray Held numerous positions while refereeing structure
in Canadian soccer and was referee-in-chief of the Expo Soccer
Tournament in Montreal in 1967 and at the Pan-American Games in
Winnipeg in the same year. In 1968, he retired and was appointed
to the FIFA Panel of Lecturers, a position he held until his
death in 1977. In 1971 he was given the "FIFA Special Award for
Referees", and on May 4, 2002 he was inducted into Canada's
Soccer Hall of Fame in Vaughan, Ontario. |
