One year later the family moved to San
Francisco where he starred in a variety of sports. His soccer career began in 1913 with the senior teams of
the San Francisco Soccer League and the California Soccer
Football Association, and continued until 1942, playing for the
San Francisco SC, San Francisco Thistle, St. George, Oakland
Athens Soccer Club and Barbarians Club. A sturdy man of medium build, he possessed quickness,
speed and strength and quickly became one of the finest
offensive threats in the game leading the local league in
scoring from 1920 to 1924. He also played for the United States in a local USA
versus Great Britain all-star game in 1918. Besides excelling as
a teenager at the Olympic club in soccer, he went on to win club
championships in handball, cycling, boxing, tennis and even took
up baseball. In 1964, he reorganized the San Francisco Olympic
Youth Club, serving as its commissioner for over 12 years. He
was treasurer of the California Soccer Football Association from
1961 to 1967, and was elected to the Association’s Hall of
Fame 1974. Also
served on the Finance Committee of the United States Soccer
Federation. Off the
field he worked for the Internal Revenue Service for almost 40
years, retiring as head of the fraud division in the San
Francisco office in 1967.
