One year later the family moved to San Francisco where he starred in a variety of sports. His soccer career began in 1913 with the senior teams of the San Francisco Soccer League and the California Soccer Football Association, and continued until 1942, playing for the San Francisco SC, San Francisco Thistle, St. George, Oakland Athens Soccer Club and Barbarians Club. A sturdy man of medium build, he possessed quickness, speed and strength and quickly became one of the finest offensive threats in the game leading the local league in scoring from 1920 to 1924. He also played for the United States in a local USA versus Great Britain all-star game in 1918. Besides excelling as a teenager at the Olympic club in soccer, he went on to win club championships in handball, cycling, boxing, tennis and even took up baseball. In 1964, he reorganized the San Francisco Olympic Youth Club, serving as its commissioner for over 12 years. He was treasurer of the California Soccer Football Association from 1961 to 1967, and was elected to the Association’s Hall of Fame 1974. Also served on the Finance Committee of the United States Soccer Federation. Off the field he worked for the Internal Revenue Service for almost 40 years, retiring as head of the fraud division in the San Francisco office in 1967.
