Al Miller


Received instant recognition in 1973 when he led the newly-formed Philadelphia Atoms club to the North American Soccer League championship in its first year.

Born: December 17, 1936 - Ono, PA

At the end of the season he was named NASL Coach of the Year. Prior to that Miller had coached New Paltz State College from 1960 to 1965 and Hartwick College from 1966 to 1972. He remained with the Atoms for three seasons but left the club when it was taken over by Mexican owners. Almost immediately he became coach of the Dallas Tornado, a position he held until the end of the 1980 season when he headed north to Canada to take over the newly-formed Calgary Boomers. The Boomers only lasted one year, but under Miller they made the play-offs. In 1982 and 1983 he was coach of the Tampa Bay Rowdies. He also coached the U.S. national team briefly in 1973. At the time of induction, was General Manager of the Cleveland Crunch of the NPSL.
