A center forward with I.W.O. Workers, a
Hungarian team in the Juvenile and Junior Division of the National Soccer
League in Chicago. In 1941 played as a junior with the Schwaben AC and
stayed with them until he joined the United States Navy on his 18th
birthday. His soccer career continued while in uniform as he played for a
French Navy Air Force team stationed in Memphis, Tennessee and with the San
Francisco Barbarians when he served in California. Soon after his honorable
discharge from the Navy in 1946 he resumed his career with the Fiche Rams SC
and played goalie for them as well as center forward. When he retired in
1960 his playing career had spanned over 26 years and his administrative
career was just beginning. He went on to serve in a variety of
administrative positions with the National Soccer League of Chicago, the
Illinois State Association, the United States Soccer Football Association
and the Chicago Mustangs and the Chicago Sting of the NASL.
He joined the Chicago
Police Department in 1953 and in 1959 was detailed from the Police
Department to serve on various committees handling the training sites,
transportation and entertainment for the eight nations competing in
the Pan American Games being held in his hometown of Chicago.
In June of 1961, he was
promoted to sergeant, and the following October assigned to O'Hare
International Airport where he remained until his retirement 21 years
later in 1983. During that time he served as the official greeter for
many foreign teams visiting Chicago.
In 1995, he was named
Chairman of the USSF National Soccer Hall of Fame Selection Committee
a position he held until his untimely death in 1999. |
