At Bangor High School he lettered in
football, basketball and then baseball and when his family moved to
Indianapolis entered Butler University majoring in Botany. Entered the
service in 1943 and served with the 44th Infantry in France and the 3rd
Infantry in Germany. While undergoing Army training at the University of
Missouri he organized a soccer team, the first of many projects which
established a trend for soccer promotion. Although he learned the game as a
boy in Germany his first organized game was with the soldier team in
Missouri. He organized the 7th Army team in 1945 and the Indiana University
Soccer Club in 1949 and was instrumental in founding the Midwestern Soccer
Conference in 1950. He coached the Indiana University Soccer team for eleven
years and turned out seven all-Americans and his team won the Midwest title
in 1955 and shared it in 1959. In addition he organized the
Indianapolis Soccer Club in 1951 and started the Ohio-Indiana Soccer League.
He was president of the Midwestern and Ohio-Indiana leagues from 1951 to
1961. Spearheaded the growth of collegiate and club soccer in Indian and
Colorado, and was a major influence in other states. A measure of the
missionary work is that in 1949 there were only four colleges playing soccer
in the Midwest but by 1963 there were 69. Served 12 years on the U.S.
Olympic Committee and as president of both the NSCAA and the Colorado State
Association. A research scientist for the Marathon Oil Company in Littleton,
Colorado and a fellow of the Geological Society of America.
