was a two-time first team All-American at Temple
University where he played from 1957-1961, setting a
record for goals with 25.

As
a pro, he played in the American Soccer League from 1958
to 1974 with Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals and Newark
Sitch. Named to six
all-star teams, and league MVP in 1966.
Won league titles with Newark Sitch in 1966 and
Ukrainian Nationals in 1971, and U.S. Open Cup titles with
Ukrainian in 1963 and 1964.
Also played for the Philadelphia Spartans of the
National Professional Soccer League in 1967 and Toronto
City of the Eastern Canada Pro Soccer League from
1961-1964, winning the league title in 1964. Player-coach
of Philadelphia Ukrainians and Inter clubs 1971-1975.
Played for the United States twice in World Cup
qualifying against Honduras in 1965 and one year before
was a member of the team that played England in an
exhibition game in New York.
Began his coaching career while still a player,
coaching Philadelphia Textile from 1961-1963 and 1966-1975,
taking the team to three NCAA quarterfinals; named NSCAA
Coach of the Year in 1975. Director of coaching for the U.S.
Soccer Federation from 1975-1981, serving as head coach
for the National, Olympic and Youth teams.
Led the youth team to their first appearance in the
finals in 1981 and the Olympic team’s second
qualification in 1980. He
coached the National Team from 1976-1980, including the
qualification rounds for the 1978 and 1982 World Cups, and
a major 2-0 upset of Hungary in 1979.
Got his hand in indoor soccer by coaching the
Philadelphia Fever in their 1981-1982 campaign.
In 1986 was named head coach at Wake Forrest
University, leading the team to four NCAA bids and one
national championship. Was
a major force in development of USSF’s coaching schools. A frequent television soccer analyst, announced the 1977
Soccer Bowl, Pele’s last pro game.
Member of Philadelphia Textile, Temple,
Pennsylvania Sports and Eastern Pennsylvania halls of
fame. 1989
South region coach of the year. Named one of Soccer America’s Twenty Men of Influence
in American Soccer. Walter
was inducted into the NSCAA Hall of Fame in 1997.
