John Harkes


John has one of the most glittering resumes for an American-born soccer players.

He received his first full international cap on May 23, 1987, playing against Canada and went on to earn 90 caps and scored six goals for the United States Men’s National Team.

He was one of the most influential figures in the midfield for the United States Men’s National Team throughout the 1990’s and served as the team’s captain in 1995.

In his professional career, John was one of the first Americans to travel overseas and succeed at the highest levels in the England. Harkes became the first American ever to play in England's Wembley Stadium when he helped Sheffield Wednesday capture the League Cup title over Manchester United in 1991. He was also the first American player to ever play in the F.A. Cup final and the first to score in a League Cup final, performing both feats in 1993 while playing for Sheffield Wednesday FC. He was also the first American to play in a UEFA Cup match in 1992.

In 1996 he decided to return to the United States and join the newly founded Major League Soccer. John became the captain for D.C. United and led them to back-to-back MLS Cup Titles in 1996 and 1997. He also led D.C. to the 1998 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup and the Interamerican Cup championships. John was then acquired by the New England Revolution in 1999 and played two and half seasons with the Revolution. John was traded to the Columbus Crew in the middle of the 2001 season and he decided to call it a career following the 2002 season with the Crew. During his MLS career, he scored 16 goals with 42 assists in 167 career appearances (155 as a starter), with an additional 22 playoff appearances as a starter (six assists). Harkes also played in five MLS All-Star Games (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000).

He started his professional career with the USISL's Albany Capitals.

John attended the University of Virginia and was honored with the
Missouri Athletic Club Award as the top Division I college soccer player.

In 2003 he was honored with a star at the U.S. Soccer Star Plaza at the Home Depot Center. He also starred in the movie The Game of Their Lives as Ed McIlvenny, a film about the United States’ historic 1-0 victory over England in the 1950 World Cup. John is currently serving as D.C. United’s Director of Youth Development.
