Bernard McLaughlin


Benny started his career with the famous Lighthouse Boys Club in his home town of Philadelphia and in 1945 joined the Philadelphia Nationals of the American Soccer League.

With the Nationals he had an outstanding career and won American Soccer League titles in 1949, 1950, 1951, and 1953. He played for the United States in the 1948 Olympics and for the U.S. national team from 1948 to 1955, including the qualifying rounds of the 1950 and 1954 and World Cups. He was selected to play for the U.S. in the final rounds of the World Cup in Brazil in 1950 but had to drop out because he couldn't get the time off work. During his international career he played against Norway and Northern Ireland in 1948, Mexico and Cuba twice in 1949, Scotland in Glasgow in 1952 before 107,765 fans, England in New York in 1953, Haiti twice in 1954 and Iceland in Reykjavik in 1955. Later in his club career he played for New York Brookhattan (1955-57), Philadelphia Uhrik Truckers (1958-60) and New York Hakoah (1961) before finishing his career with the New York German Hungarians of the German-American League and Erzebirge of Philadelphia from 1963 to 1965.
