James Gallagher


Jimmy came to the U.S. with his mother at the age of 12. He grew up and went to school in the New York area and at the age of 17 was playing for the Tebo Yacht Basin team.

He began his first class career in the American Soccer League with the J&P Coats team of Pawtucket in 1921 and was a member of their championship winning team in the 1922-23 season. Later he went on to play for Indiana Flooring, New York Nationals and New York Giants before moving to Cleveland to play for Slavia. In 1929 he was a member of the Nationals team that won the Lewis Cup. In 1930 he was selected to play for the U.S. World Cup team and appeared in all three games in Montevideo. Early in 1932 he was a member of the New York Giants team that won the American Soccer League championship over New Bedford Whalers in a memorable two game series. Four years later while with Cleveland Slavia he was once against selected for the World Cup team and played in Italy. One of Gallagher's greatest assets was that he could play equally well at right half or outside right and was often used with great effect in the latter position.
