John B. Souza


Known to his team mates as "Clarkie" he was a member of the 1950 U.S. World Cup team that defeated England 1-0 which is known as greatest upset in the history of English Football.

Souza first attracted attention in his home town as a member of the great Ponta Delgada team that reached the U.S. Open Cup final in 1946 and 1947 and won the U.S. Amateur Cup in 1946, 1947 and 1948. By winning the Open and Amateur cups in the same year in 1947 the Ponta's became the first team to do so. In 1946 Ponta Delgada lost the U.S. Open Cup to the Chicago Vikings in a two game series. But in 1947 they were back in the final again this team beating Chicago Sparta 6-1 in the first game and 3-2 in the second. In winning the U.S. Amateur Cup three years in a row Ponta Delgada beat Castle Shannon 5-2 in 1946, St. Louis Carondelets 10-1 in 1947 and Pittsburgh Curry Vets 4-1 in 1948. Souza played in two more U.S. Open Cup finals and two more Amateur Cup finals. 

In 1950 in the U.S. Open Cup the Ponta's lost a two game series to St. Louis Simpkins Ford but won the Amateur Cup by beating Harmarville. Souza then moved on to play for the New York German-Hungarians who beat Pittsburgh Heidelburg in the Open Cup final of 1951 and Harmarville in the Amateur Cup.  He was also a member of the Ponta Delgada team selected to represent the U.S. in the North American championship of 1947 against Mexico and Cuba in Cuba. In 1948 he was a member of the U.S. Olympic team at the games in London and in 1952 at the games in Helsinki. But it was as a member of the 1950 World Cup team that he really made his name being selected as one of the best players in the competition. He was also a member of the U.S. national team that played Scotland at Hampden Park in Glasgow in 1952 before 107,765 fans and the League of Ireland in Dublin in the same year. In addition he played for various all-star teams against numerous touring teams including Liverpool in 1946, Djurgarden and the Israeli national team in 1948, Belfast Celtic, Scotland and Inter-Milan in 1949, Manchester United, Besiktas and the F.A. touring team in 1950, AIK Stockholm and Eintract Frankfurt in 1951, Stuttgart Kickers in 1952 and Nurnberg in 1953.There is no relation between Clarkie Souza and his team mate Ed Souza.
