Thomas Florie


Tom served in the United States Navy during World War I and didn't make his mark in soccer until the mid-1920's.

He broke into the American Soccer League with Harrison in the 1921-22 season, where he was a team-mate of Sam Fletcher, but returned to New Jersey amateur soccer for the 1922-23 and 1923-24 seasons with American A.A. of Harrison, who played in the West Hudson Amateur League. When Fletcher became manager of the new Providence franchise in 1924 he signed Florie and who remained with the Clamdiggers until early in the 1928-29 season. At that point he was transferred to the New Bedford where he played for the Whalers until 1932 winning a U.S. Open Cup winners medal in that season against St. Louis Stix, Bear and Fuller. From 1924 until 1931 he scored 125 goals in the ASL. Later in his career he played for Pawtucket Rangers and was on the losing side in the Open Cup final of 1935 against St. Louis Central Breweries, before claiming a second winners medal in 1941 against Detroit Chrysler at the age of 43. However, the outstanding achievement of his career was made as captain of the highly successful U.S. World Cup team in 1930 in Montevideo, Uruguay. He was also a member of the World Cup team in 1934.
