99 World Cup Memories

The National Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum took the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy to the home games of Sky Blue FC and the Washington Freedom on July 4th and 5th, respectively. We asked the fans attending the games for their reflections on the 1999 Women’s World Cup.

"Fantastic moment sharing with many happy soccer fans. Recognition Thanks!"

"This was the start - the defining moment for all women who played before and after – the beautiful game."

"After the final (which I watched on TV) I burst into tears – and then called my now 22-year-old daughter’s first youth coach, and cried with him too."

"Hey Bri! We are so excited to see the cup and remember your amazing saves."

"It was awesome."

"I went to the quarterfinal on crutches – 2 days after my knee surgery from my own soccer years. I was amazed at how far soccer had come for the U.S. since the men’s world cup in ’94 – and to the women at that – I couldn’t have been prouder! They have left an incredible legacy for my daughter to live up to. Thank you!" –Nikki Thompson

"What a wonderful group who made us so proud."

"80,000 people jumping to their feet as one when Mia scored the first goal at Giants Stadium!" –Lynn Hoenig
