The United States
Soccer Federation has named Landon Donovan and Abby Wambach the
2003 Chevrolet Male and Female Athletes of the Year for their
contributions to the United States National Team and to
professional soccer.
Landon Donovan,
led the United States Men's National Team to an impressive record in 2003. Donovan led the team in scoring (19
points), goals scored (7), minutes played (1,224) in 15 games.
He was
also named
Honda
Player of the Year
this past year.
On the
professional level, Donovan guided the San Jose Earthquakes to
the
2003
MLS Cup
title - their second MLS Cup in 3 years. Donovan scored 2
goals in the final where he was named MLS Cup MVP.
Abby Wambach exploded onto the
Women's soccer scene in 2003. Wambach was key figure in
the success the Women's National Team had this year. She
led the Women's National Team with three goals and to the Bronze
Medal at the
FIFA Women's
World Cup. Abby
scored 9 goals in all competitions for the Women.
Wambach scored
both goals leading the Washington Freedom to their first
Founder's Cup. Wambach earned MVP honors after she scored an
outstanding goal in extra time to seal the victory.
Adu, Reddick Named Chevrolet's Young Athlete of the Year
Award
The much
publicized Freddy Adu was named the 2004 Chevrolet Young Male
Athlete of the Year. Adu, who is only 14 years old, has
already made a name for himself around the world. Adu led the
United States U-17 National Team to a great run in the FIFA U-17
Championship before losing to Brazil 3-0 in the quarterfinals.
Adu was a member
of U-20 Men's National and made three appearances in the FIFA
World Youth Championships. The U-20 National Team finished fifth
- its best finish since 1989. Freddy Adu will be
starting his professional soccer career with DC United at the
tender age of 15. Adu is set to make an astonishing
$500,000/year (the highest paid MLS player). Adu has also
signed a million dollar contract with Nike.
Cat Reddick made
17 appearances for the Women's National Team in 2003. She
also made 9 appearances for the Women's U-21 National
Team. During the Women's World Cup Cat Reddick had the
task of coming in and replacing Brandi Chastain - who went down
with an injury. Reddick started five matches and scored
two important goals for the Women. Cat Reddick led the University of
North Carolina to an undefeated (27-0) season and to the
Division I National title.
She produced six goal and five assists in 13 matches (due to
playing in the Women's World Cup). Reddick was recently
named the 2003
M.A.C's
Hermann Award Winner
and First-Team All American for her outstanding season. |
