2009 InducteesIt's Joy and Jeff for 2009!
The Hall of Fame announced the 2009 Induction class Thursday night on Fox Soccer Channel’s Center Circle Live show from the NSCAA convention floor in St. Louis (video will be available at http://www.soccerhall.org/). Two players will make up the 2009 class and come to Oneonta, NY for Induction on August 2: WNT standout Joy Fawcett and MNT stalwart Jeff Agoos.

Joy Fawcett’s career extended over 15 years of international soccer as a central defender of the United States Women’s National Team. Among her accomplishments were: Two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup Champion, Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist; earning 239 caps, 4th in U.S. Women’s National Team history, she was an important cog in the team’s defense and played virtually every minute in four FIFA World Cups and three Olympic Tournaments during which she received no red cards and only two yellow cards in her international career. She is the 7th starter in the 1991 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final to become a Hall of Famer.

09 TournamentsThe 2009 Legends of Summer Tournaments are beginning to fill up fast, so sign your team up today!

Why should you play in our tournaments? Its simple: to give your team the opportunity to play on the best fields in the Northeast, at the only tournament that allows you to inspire your team in the National Museum for their favorite sport. And, the competition will be outstanding! Teams travel to our tournaments from Canada, Maine, Virginia and everywhere in between, so you will see how you rate against some of the best. And lastly, by bringing your team here, you support the Hall and help get the word out about how great the Soccer Hall of Fame is.

For the ultimate team experience, ask about team building sleepovers in the museum, which includes dinner and breakfast, and a chance to sleep among the legends, watch a movie on the big screen, and increase your teams skills in the Kick Zone after hours. It’s a great way to end a season or begin a new one with a team. Call 607.432.3351 and ask for Pamela.

Festival of Trees 08The 2008 Festival of Trees, a community fundraising event, was a resounding success!
By the Numbers: We had 44 trees decorated by 100’s of people giving their time and talent - we also had 44 tree sponsors who provided the funds for the pre-lit trees, 27 crafters selling their wares and 15 Home party specialists; 43 dancers performing the Nutcracker, 100’s of singers from the various schools and 1,572 visitors throughout the Festival. We collected over 600 pounds of food for the community food bank, and helped raise funds and awareness for 17 other non-profits in the region. A special thank you to our day sponsors: Mead Westvaco, My Hero Deli, Hughson and Benson Insurance, CNY Radio Group, MVP Healthcare and the Clark Companies who allowed us to keep the Festival of Trees admission free!

It was a great event and we look forward to continuing to expand it in the future. We had several businesses use the Hall to hold their holiday parties amongst the trees and it is never too early to think about 2009, so if you want the details for having a party, a dance, or a banquet contact our events manager, Pamela Frutiger at 607.432.3351.

Harry KeoughHall of Famer Profile: Harry Keough
Harry Keough spent much of his life as a St. Louis postman, but, as a right fullback, he also delivered the mail on the soccer field. Along with the famous win against England at the 1950 World Cup, there were two U.S. Open Cup championships and seven! U.S. Amateur Cup championships in a career that began in 1945 with a U.S. Junior Cup win with the St. Louis Schumachers. Harry played a total of 17 international matches for the United States, beginning with the 1949 World Cup qualifying games in Mexico.

He joined Saint Louis University in 1967 as Head Coach of men’s soccer and, over a 16-year career, won five NCAA Division I National Championships. His 213 games won is still the most in SLU history; a history that led to his induction into the NSCAA Hall of Fame in 1996.

Harry has returned for Induction weekends for the past eight years, enjoying the chance to reminisce with old teammates Walter Bahr and John ‘Clarkie’ Souza. “It’s always a thrill to see old friends and to make new ones as more modern players are elected to the Hall of Fame. To talk with Julie and Mia in 2007 and to speak Spanish with Hugo Perez last year was just so much fun,” he said, referring to the annual Liars’ Retreat. “I am looking forward to 2009 and another opportunity to proudly wear my Hall of Fame red blazer.”

Harry also remembers the Hall of Fame among his charitable donations. “The Hall of Fame staff does so much with their resources, I am always amazed. They are dedicated and hard-working. The Induction Weekend is such a class event, how could I not support them monetarily!”

With the National Soccer Coaches Association of America convention in his home city in 2009, the Hall of Fame will take a portion of the history of the game to this classic soccer city, bringing along photographs of St. Louisians and Bob Annis’ jacket from the 1950 World Cup trip, a blue wool sport coat of inestimable value. The Hall will also inaugurate an annual NSCAA Symposium, “Voices of Soccer: Hall of Famers and Their Passion for the Game,” bringing together the two newly announced inductees, Jeff Agoos and Joy Fawcett with Marcelo Balboa, Anson Dorrance, Julie Foudy in an open discussion moderated by Hall of Fame President Steve Baumann. The conversation will focus on the future of the game, drawing from the past experiences of these Hall of Famers.

Where’s Harry? Well, it is winter in St. Louis. Harry and Alma prefer the warmth of Guadalajara, Mexico during this time of year. But have no fear, Harry will be among those planning another excursion to Oneonta for Induction 2009.
